Australian Poisons Schedules (Medicines & Chemicals)

  • Schedule 1:   Not currently in use.

  • Schedule 2 (Pharmacy Medicine):   Available on pharmacy shelves.

  • Schedule 3 (Pharmacist Only Medicine):   Behind the counter, pharmacist advice needed.

  • Schedule 4 (Prescription Only Medicine):   Requires a doctor's prescription.

  • Schedule 5 (Caution):   Low potential for harm, household products like bleach.

  • Schedule 6 (Poison):   Moderate risk, special packaging required, e.g. some agricultural chemicals.

  • Schedule 7 (Dangerous Poison):   High potential for harm at low exposure, specialised use/licenses required, e.g. certain pesticides.

  • Schedule 8 (Controlled Drug):   High abuse potential, e.g. opioids.

  • Schedule 9 (Prohibited Substance):   Illegal, restricted to research/clinical trials.

  • Schedule 10:   Prohibited sale, supply, or use.
