Poison Application Methods

Aerial Baiting

Distributed by aerial drops using helicopters or aeroplanes over large areas. Aerial poison baits are food items (meat, sausages, or baits containing grains) laced with toxins, primarily 1080 (sodium fluoroacetate) or PAPP (para-aminopropiophenone), that are dropped from aeroplanes or helicopters. Used for landscape-scale control of invasive predators like foxes, wild dogs, and rabbits, this method targets areas inaccessible by land to protect livestock and native wildlife.

Ground Baiting

Ground-based hand-laying of poison baits is a highly targeted, cost-effective method used for controlling invasive predators and pests, such as wild dogs, foxes, rabbits, and feral pigs. This technique involves manually placing baits, often meat or bait pellets containing toxins like 1080, Pindone or PAPP, either directly onto the ground or buried to prevent non-target species from consuming them. This method is commonly used for smaller-scale, more precise, or accessible areas where aerial baiting is not practical, allowed, or cost-effective.

  • 1080 baits for wild dogs are buried 10 cm under ground to restrict removal by native species. Bait stations are placed at least 100m apart and 500m apart if quolls are thought to occur in the area.

  • Curiosity baits consisting of sausages implanted with a pellet containing PAPP poison are laid at a maximum rate of 5 baits/10ha and intervals of at least 100m.

Canid Pest Ejectors (CPEs)

Capsules used in CPEs are triggered by the animal pulling the ejector head, releasing the toxin directly into the mouth.

Grooming Trap

An automated trap, solar-powered, camera-based artificial intelligence system working in tandem with Lidar (in newer units) to distinguish a target animal from a non-target animal and humans. When a target animal passes within range of the unit, a lethal dose of poisonous gel is sprayed onto the coat to exploit innate grooming behaviours.
